Gearing has no set spec. There are several factors to consider. The main one,.....track size, tire circumfrence, engine setup, kart weight. These all go hand in hand.

Track: Tight corners/sweeping corners. Long straights/ short chutes.
Engine: Where did the engine builder set the power band?
Tires: roll out effects gearing
Kart weight: is a 250lb kart going to rev as good off the corner than a 375lb kart, and at the end of the straight away?

A tach is your best friend when adjusting gearing. I like the old Digitron DT 32. It has a marker button where you can check RPM at 3 different places on the track. If the track has a long straight, you can mark your RPM coming off the corner, then at the middle of the straightaway, and again at the end of the straight. This will give you an idea where you are at on gearing. If your target RPM is 6500 RPM, this will tell you where it's at. I hear drivers say, "I'm turning 6500, but I'm getting passed."This marker will tell you where you're getting your target RPM. If it's in the middle of the straight, the engine is not pulling any more, therefore, not making any power. You want the engine to pull all the way down the straight.

My advice.....start with your baseline, and tune from there.
